Cordero Lodge

Approaching Upper Rapids and Cordero Channel early in the morning.

We left Waiatt Bay at 6:30 this morning to time our arrival at Upper Rapids with slack tide. Once again, the wind was already blowing and we saw 10 to 15 knots on the nose with gusts up to 20 knots, but it subsided before too long and we had a beautiful trip meandering through the narrow waterways that cut between the islands and idyllic scenery.

By 10:15 am we arrived at Cordero Lodge, one of many family-owned marinas that dot the coastline, tucked in behind Lorte Island. The K├╝ppers have lived here for thirty years – winter, spring, summer and fall – building, expanding and making improvements along the way (including a float-plane dock that seconds as a helipad).

The temperature's been heating up over the past couple of days and we were too hot to eat one of Lois's famous German-style meals in the restaurant, but we came in later to sample her apple strudel, which was worth every penny of the seven dollar price tag.

When we'd finished desert, there were a few people on the dock enjoying the evening shade but, with another early-morning departure planned, we opted to be unsocial and called it an early night.
