the Strait of Juan de Fuca

The Strait of Juan de Fuca

Mount Baker in the distance as we cross the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

With the currents in our favour, we decided to spend only one night in Port Ludlow and make our way to Garrison Bay on San Juan Island – some forty-six nautical miles away.

I’ve been itching for a good sail, but it wasn’t meant to be.  The wind was coming from the right direction, but there wasn’t enough to fill our sails.  And while I mourned the loss of what may have been one of our best opportunities this season – crossing the Strait of Juan de Fuca – David remarked how beautiful the conditions were.  He was right.  And after taking a real look around at the millpond of the sea and Mount Baker looming in the distance, I begrudgingly had to agree: this can be an ugly stretch of water and today was nothing short of a gift.
